Running for Health May Not Always Apply To Distance Events
Distance runners run the risk of damaging their right heart ventricle involved in pumping blood from the heart to other parts of the body. The damage is irreversible under normal circumstances. However, a study conducted on 40 elite long-distance athletes indicated permanent damage in terms of heart muscle fibrosis or scarring in five cases.
Results of the study must not discourage athletes from taking part in distance running, as a small study group of just 40 runners was not sufficient to generalize findings. In 35 cases, adverse changes occurring in athletes’ hearts reversed within a week of participation in competition. The body’s immune system was able to reverse the condition but not in all cases.
